Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – Days ahead of polls opening on Sunday May 5, the country’s two leading contenders for power are slugging it out in a final push for votes.

Prime Minister Najib Razak is attempting to fight off a challenge from long-term opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim, as the race tightens in its final hours.

Meeting hundreds of voters, each candidate has been trying to overcome what has been termed a “culture of scandal” that has permeated domestic politics.

Najib has vehemently denied links to the 2006 murder of a Mongolian translator, while Anwar has had to make a comeback from a six-year spell in prison for “sodomy”, after being accused of having a homosexual affair.

But as the campaigns draw to a close, each man has focused on energising their core supporters and encouraging voters to turn out at the ballots on Sunday.

A motorcycle convoy carried flags of the People(***)s Justice Party (front) and the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party (rear) - two parts of the People(***)s Pact alliance, a coalition under Anwar(***)s leadership.

Prime Minister Najib Razak has widespread support for his re-election bid.
Najib(***)s rally drew wide support in Wangsa Maju, a suburb of capital Kuala Lumpur, where the prime minister is expected to perform well in polls.
Entering the venue, Najib was quickly surrounded by supporters and staff.
The dinner for supporters of the prime minister (centre) was well attended, with hundreds standing to sing the national anthem, Negaraku ["My Country"].
Najib addressed the crowd using his (***)1Malaysia(***) platform - a government promotion of national unity.
Party officials presented Najib joined him on stage as the speech ended to rapturous applause.
The rallies were among the last in this election campaign, which wraps up as voters head to the polls on Sunday.
