Former Libyan intelligence officer convicted of the 1988 Lockerbie bombing that killed 270 people, Abdel Basset al-Megrahi, has died.

Most of those killed in the bombing of the Boeing 747 jet headed from London to New York were US citizens. All 259 passengers and crew were killed, along with 11 people on the ground.

Abdelbaset Ali Mohmet al-Megrahi, the only person convicted over the 1988 Lockerbie bombing over Scotland in which 270
people were killed, died on Sunday, his brother told AFP news agency.

Megrahi suffered from prostate cancer and was hospitalised for a few days in April before being sent back home to be with his family.

Megrahi(***)s conviction was one of the first steps paving the way for improved relations between British and Libyan authorities. After "renouncing terrorism", Muammar Gaddafi enjoyed a relaxed hometown visit with then-Prime Minister Tony Blair in Sirte.

Megrahi had been greeted as a "hero" on his return to Muammar Gaddafi(***)s Libya, after having served eight years of a minimum 27-year sentence for his role in the bombing.

Megrahi was 60 years old. He suffered from prostate cancer and was hospitalised for a few days in April before being sent back home to be with his family. On April 16, Abdelhakim had said his brother(***)s days "were numbered".

On December 21, 2011, the 23rd anniversary of the Lockerbie attack, President Barack Obama visited Arlington National Cemetary and vowed that Washington would pursue justice in a newly free Libya for the 1988 attack.

Megrahi(***)s release on compassionate grounds led to his immediate transfer to Libya.
Greeted by Saif al-Islam, son of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, Megrahi was given a hero(***)s welcome upon his arrival at Tripoli airport in Tripoli on August 20, 2009. Scenes of the flag-waving celebrations were met with anger in Scotland and the US.

Megrahi died at home in Tripoli after a long battle with cancer. His health had deteriorated quickly, his brother Abdulhakim told news agencies.
