Qatar’s extraordinary art investment
Sur La Terre Arabia’s Laura Hamilton takes us on a tour of Qatar’s $25bn art collection.
Recently Sheikha Al-Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the head of the Qatar Museums Authority (QMA), was named the most influential personality in the world of art.
ArtReview in its annual “Power 100”, said the sister of the current emir of Qatar, topped the charts due to “her organisation’s vast purchasing power”.
The QMA spends about $1bn a year on art, including developing galleries, sponsoring and arranging film festivals and public art. Sur La Terre Arabia’s Laura Hamilton shows Counting the Cost around Qatar’s $25bn art investment.
